How our rankings work
Every "best of" page on CompareInsurance.co.za is the output of a single, repeatable scoring framework. We publish the inputs so you can see exactly what's behind the ordering — and disagree with us if your priorities differ.
| Pillar | Weight | What we measure |
|---|---|---|
Claims experience | 30% | Speed of claims turnaround, repudiation rate, public Ombud (OSTI/OLTI) ruling history and reviewer testimony. |
Value | 25% | Premium competitiveness across age and risk bands, excess structure, no-claim benefits, multi-product discounts. |
Customer experience | 20% | Verified reviewer ratings, app and digital quality, call-centre wait times, complaint resolution. |
Product strength | 15% | Breadth and depth of cover options, optional add-ons, sub-limits, niche use-cases (e-hailing, classic cars, business). |
Stability & reputation | 10% | Underwriter solvency, brand age, regulatory standing, parent group strength. |
Where our data comes from
- FSCA conduct returns and OSTI annual reports for claims and complaint data.
- Verified reviewer ratings collected on this site, deduplicated and moderated.
- Premium benchmarking via repeated test quotes across age, vehicle and location segments.
- Public master policy wordings and product disclosures.
"Best for" labels
Beyond the headline score, each insurer earns up to two "best for" labels — for example "Strong claims reputation", "Good for families", "Premium service". These are derived from the same scoring data and editorial review, and they're how we surface fit rather than ranking. A budget insurer can earn a "Popular for affordability" label without out-ranking premium players.
When rankings change
Rankings are refreshed quarterly, or sooner when a material event — a major Ombud ruling, a product launch, a solvency event — warrants. We publish the date of the last review at the top of every ranking page. If you spot something out of date, email editor@compareinsurance.co.za.
The commercial firewall
We earn referral fees when you request a quote through our funnel. That compensation affects the order of provider cards on commercial listings (clearly labelled), but never the editorial score, ranking position on "best of" pages, or what we recommend.
