Why insurance claims get rejected in South Africa

The top reasons SA insurers repudiate claims — and how to make sure yours doesn't end up in that pile.

Quick summary

The Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance receives over 10,000 complaints a year. The four most common rejection reasons are non-disclosure, lapsed premiums, unlicensed drivers and breach of policy conditions like an unfitted tracker.

Best for

  • ·Anyone about to claim
  • ·Policyholders renewing
  • ·Households with multiple drivers on one policy

Watch out for

  • ·Letting a tracker contract lapse
  • ·Adding a regular driver as 'occasional' to save money
  • ·Forgetting to declare modifications

Frequent questions

What can I do if my claim is rejected?
Ask for the rejection in writing with the specific policy clause cited. If you disagree, escalate to the insurer's internal review, then to the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI) — free, independent and binding on the insurer.
How long do I have to lodge a claim in SA?
Most SA policies require notification within 30 days of the incident. After that, insurers can reject for late notification even if the claim is otherwise valid.
Will a rejected claim affect future cover?
Yes. Insurers share claims and rejection data via the IIBSA database. A repudiation for non-disclosure follows you for years.

Non-disclosure — the biggest single reason

If you don't tell your insurer something material — previous claims, a licence suspension, a modification, the real regular driver — they can reject the claim and cancel the policy back to inception. Honesty at quote time is the cheapest insurance of all.

Lapsed cover

A returned debit order in SA usually triggers a 15-day grace period, then cover lapses silently. If you crash on day 18, you're uninsured. Set premium debits a day after payday and check your bank statement.

Unlicensed or unauthorised driver

Lending your car to someone with a learner's licence, an expired licence or a licence from a country not recognised by SA voids the claim. Domestic workers and family members must be added as regular or occasional drivers.

Policy condition breaches

Not fitting the tracker the policy required, not garaging the car overnight as declared, or using a private car for paid Uber driving without a commercial schedule are all common ways to lose cover entirely.
